KUMARAKOMThe Vembanad Bird Sanctuary Backwater
The Brief
Kumarakom is a backwater village on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake — India's longest lake — in the Kottayam district of Kerala. It is known for the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary (a 14-acre Ramsar-listed wetland for resident and migratory birds), lakefront luxury and Ayurveda resorts, and quieter houseboat cruising than Alleppey. It is the slow-luxury counterpart to Alleppey on the same backwater. MyTripMyTravel operates Kumarakom as a refined lakeside-and-Ayurveda leg of the Kerala circuit.
Kumarakom and Alleppey share the same Vembanad backwater, but they are not the same product. Alleppey is the active cruise base; Kumarakom is the lakefront-luxury and Ayurveda base — staying still rather than moving.
The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the natural anchor — a Ramsar wetland that draws cormorants, darters, herons, egrets, and seasonal migrants — best at dawn, escorted with a naturalist.
Around it sits the highest concentration of serious lakefront luxury and Ayurveda resorts in Kerala, with private jetties, infinity pools to the lake, and physician-led wellness programmes.
MyTripMyTravel runs Kumarakom as the slow leg of the Kerala mission — paired with Alleppey if a houseboat night is wanted, or used as the still alternative if it is not.

When to Deploy
November – February
November to February is the prime window — calm backwater, comfortable humidity, and the peak bird-sanctuary season for migratory species. October and March are still strong shoulders. June to September monsoon is heavy but is the traditional Karkidaka Ayurveda treatment season (a deliberate choice for serious wellness guests). April–May is hot and humid.
