Kumbhalgarh

The Great Wall of India

Overview

Kumbhalgarh is a Mewar hill fortress in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, India, built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha in the Aravalli range. Its perimeter wall runs for roughly 36 km, among the longest continuous fortifications in the world, earning it the nickname the 'Great Wall of India'. The fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan and is revered as the birthplace of the Mewar hero Maharana Pratap. It lies about 85 km north of Udaipur and 35 km from Ranakpur. MyTripMyTravel operates Kumbhalgarh as a chauffeured heritage day, a walk along the ramparts, the hilltop Badal Mahal, and the evening light-and-sound show, often paired with the Ranakpur temple.

Kumbhalgarh is the fortress that Mewar never lost. Perched high on an Aravalli ridge, it was the redoubt the rulers of Udaipur retreated to when their capitals fell, and its defences show why. The great wall coils along the hilltops for some 36 km, wide enough in places for horsemen to ride abreast, wrapping more than 350 temples and shrines inside its circuit.

Rana Kumbha, the 15th-century Mewar ruler and prolific fort-builder, raised Kumbhalgarh, and the citadel is bound up with the dynasty's identity: it is remembered as the birthplace of Maharana Pratap, the warrior-king who resisted the Mughals. At the summit sits the Badal Mahal, the 'Palace of Clouds', from which the ramparts and the surrounding wilderness of the Kumbhalgarh sanctuary fall away on every side.

MyTripMyTravel runs Kumbhalgarh as a controlled heritage day rather than a rushed photo stop. The climb is timed against the heat and the light, an escorted walk explains the wall and the palace, and the evening light-and-sound show closes the visit. Because Ranakpur's marble temple sits only 35 km away, the two are almost always sequenced together on the arc between Udaipur and Jodhpur.

When to visit

October to March

October to March is the prime window, with cool, clear air that makes the rampart walk and the ridge climb comfortable and the views across the Aravallis sharp. Winter evenings suit the light-and-sound show at the fort. April to June brings strong hilltop heat best met with dawn sightseeing and an air-conditioned fleet. The monsoon (July to September) greens the surrounding Kumbhalgarh sanctuary dramatically but can bring mist that veils the long wall.
