Desert Temples on the Edge of the Thar

Overview

Osian, also spelled Osiyan, is an ancient temple town in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, India, on the edge of the Thar Desert. Once a prosperous trading centre under the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty, it preserves a remarkable cluster of Hindu and Jain temples dating from the 8th to the 12th centuries, including the hilltop Sachiya Mata Temple and the early Mahavira Jain Temple, which has earned it the nickname the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan'. Osian lies about 65 km north of Jodhpur on the road toward the desert. MyTripMyTravel operates Osian as a chauffeured desert-and-heritage day, the sculpted early temples paired with dune camps, camel encounters, and a Thar-fringe sunset.

Osian is one of Rajasthan's great overlooked sites. Long before the desert forts of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer rose, this was a flourishing trading and religious town, and the temples its patrons left behind, carved between the 8th and 12th centuries, count among the oldest and most refined in the region. The concentration of early sculpture has earned it comparison with Khajuraho.

Two sites anchor the town. The Sachiya Mata Temple, a still-active hilltop shrine reached by a stepped gateway, draws pilgrims to the mother goddess. Below it, the Mahavira Jain Temple, among the earliest surviving Jain temples in western India, preserves finely worked sandstone from the Gurjara-Pratihara era, alongside ruined Hindu shrines to Surya and Harihara scattered through the town.

MyTripMyTravel runs Osian as a two-sided day: the deep antiquity of the temples in the cooler hours, and the sensory pull of the Thar's edge as the light drops. Set only about 65 km from Jodhpur, it works as a desert excursion from the Blue City or as a first taste of dune country on the way toward Bikaner and Jaisalmer, with camel encounters and a curated camp arranged for those who want the sand.

When to visit

October to March

The desert-fringe location makes October to March the clear choice, with warm days and cool nights ideal for temple visits and dune evenings. November to February brings the most comfortable conditions for a camel encounter and a Thar sunset. April to June is severe desert heat, workable only with dawn sightseeing and an air-conditioned fleet. The brief monsoon (July to September) softens the landscape but is short and unpredictable this far into the arid west.

Good to know

Osian, your questions

Why is Osian called the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan'?

Because of its dense cluster of finely sculpted 8th to 12th-century Hindu and Jain temples, an unusually rich concentration of early carving for the region, echoing the sculptural fame of Khajuraho, though on its own distinct terms.

Can Osian be visited as a day trip from Jodhpur?

Yes. At about 65 km, it is an easy chauffeured day trip from the Blue City, most guests pair the temples with a Thar-fringe sunset and return, or stay one night at a desert camp.

Is Osian worth an overnight?

If you want the desert experience, yes. An overnight at a dune camp adds a camel encounter, a starlit dinner, and a quiet sunrise that a day trip cannot match. Otherwise the temples themselves are a half-day.

What is the main temple to see?

The two anchors are the active hilltop Sachiya Mata Temple and the early Mahavira Jain Temple; the surrounding ruined shrines round out the visit. Our guide sequences them for the best light and access.
