SHIMLAThe Queen of Hill Stations
The Brief
Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, India, set at roughly 2,200 m in the lower Himalaya. It was the summer capital of British India, and that legacy survives in the Ridge, the mock-Tudor Viceregal Lodge, Christ Church, and the pedestrian Mall Road. The UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway, with 102 tunnels, is one of the great mountain rail journeys. Shimla is the gateway hill station of the western Himalayan circuit. MyTripMyTravel operates Shimla as a colonial-heritage and altitude-acclimatisation leg with heritage stays and the toy-train experience.
Shimla is the Raj in the mountains — the city the British built to escape the plains, and still the most legible colonial hill station in India. It is also the natural acclimatisation step before pushing deeper toward Manali and Leh.
The heritage spine is the Ridge and Mall Road: Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, and the half-timbered Viceregal Lodge from which the British governed a subcontinent each summer. The approach itself is the headline — the UNESCO Kalka–Shimla toy train climbing through 102 tunnels and a hundred curves is one of the world's classic narrow-gauge journeys.
MyTripMyTravel runs Shimla as a heritage-and-acclimatisation leg: the toy-train experience on the scenic stretch, a restored colonial-hotel stay, and an escorted Ridge walk timed away from the domestic peak-hour crowds.

When to Deploy
March – June, September – November
March to June brings pleasant spring-summer days ideal for heritage walks and the toy train. September to November offers crisp post-monsoon clarity. December to February brings snow — atmospheric but with road and rail disruption. The monsoon (July–August) risks landslides on the mountain roads. Spring and autumn are optimal.

SHIMLA FAQIs the toy train worth it?
Decisively — the UNESCO Kalka–Shimla railway is one of the great mountain rail journeys. We curate the most scenic stretch with a fleet handover either side.
How many nights in Shimla?
Two nights covers the heritage core, the toy train, and a ridge viewpoint without rushing — and acclimatises you for the deeper Himalaya.
Does it snow in Shimla?
Yes, December–February, which is atmospheric but disrupts roads and rail. Spring and autumn are the smoothest windows.
How does Shimla connect to Manali and Leh?
Shimla is the gateway; the western circuit runs Shimla → Manali → (seasonally) Leh by chauffeured fleet.
