Vagamon
Meadows, Pine & Paragliding Skies
Overview
Vagamon is a quiet hill station in Kerala's Idukki district, in the Western Ghats at around 1,100 metres, on the border with Kottayam district. It is known for rolling green meadows, pine forests, and tea gardens, and has become one of South India's notable paragliding destinations, hosting a paragliding festival. Three adjacent hills, Thangal Para, Murugan Mala, and Kurisumala, associated with Muslim, Hindu, and Christian traditions, give it a reputation for religious harmony; the Cistercian Kurisumala Ashram sits nearby. MyTripMyTravel runs Vagamon as a cool, uncrowded highland retreat and a calmer alternative to Munnar.
Vagamon is Kerala's understated hill station, the one that has kept its quiet while Munnar filled up. Perched at around 1,100 metres in the Western Ghats where Idukki meets Kottayam, it is a landscape of open, wind-combed meadows, dense planted pine forest, and tea slopes, cool enough year-round to feel like a genuine escape from the tropical coast.
Its character is gentle and a little spiritual. Three neighbouring hills, Thangal Para, Murugan Mala, and Kurisumala, tied to Muslim, Hindu, and Christian devotion, have long given Vagamon a name for quiet inter-faith harmony, and the Cistercian Kurisumala Ashram adds a contemplative note. In counterpoint, the same open ridgelines and reliable thermals have made Vagamon one of South India's recognised paragliding spots, with an annual festival drawing pilots to the meadows.
MyTripMyTravel runs Vagamon as a highland decompression leg. We base guests in view-facing estate stays, arrange tandem paragliding for those who want the adventure and unhurried meadow-and-pine walks for those who don't, and thread it into a wider Kerala itinerary as the cool, crowd-free counterweight to the backwaters and the coast.

Vagamon in brief
When to visit
September to May
The long dry window from September to May is ideal for Vagamon, cool days, clear meadow views, and stable conditions for paragliding, which peaks in the winter and spring months. December to February can be genuinely chilly at altitude, so pack a layer. The southwest monsoon (June to August) blankets the hills in mist and rain, lush and dramatic, but with limited views, muddy trails, and paragliding suspended.

Good to know
Vagamon, your questions
Is Vagamon better than Munnar?
It is different, not better, Vagamon is smaller, greener in an open-meadow way, and far less crowded, which is exactly why some guests prefer it. Munnar has the grander tea landscapes and more infrastructure. We often pair the two.
Can I go paragliding in Vagamon?
Yes. Vagamon is one of South India's recognised paragliding destinations and hosts an annual festival. We arrange tandem flights with certified operators in the dry season, weather permitting.
How many days do I need?
One to two nights is enough to enjoy the meadows, the pine forest, a paragliding flight or a hill walk, and the cool air, especially as part of a wider Kerala hill loop.
How do I reach Vagamon?
Most guests drive up from Kochi (about 100 km) or Kottayam by our fleet, on scenic Ghat roads. We handle the mountain transfer in daylight.
When should I avoid?
The June to August monsoon brings heavy mist and rain that limits views and suspends paragliding, beautiful but restrictive. September to May is the reliable window.
Is it suitable for a restful stay?
Very much so. Vagamon's quiet, cool, uncrowded character makes it one of Kerala's better highland decompression stops.
