LACHENThe Gateway to Gurudongmar
The Brief
Lachen is a high-altitude village in North Sikkim, India, at roughly 2,750 m, set in a protected zone of the Sikkim Himalaya. It is the staging base for Gurudongmar Lake — one of the highest lakes in the world at over 5,400 m, near the Tibetan frontier — and Chopta Valley. It is the deeper-altitude counterpart to Lachung. MyTripMyTravel operates Lachen as a permit-managed, medically-aware high-altitude extension of the Sikkim circuit.
Lachen is North Sikkim's far end — a village that exists, for the traveller, as the launch point for Gurudongmar, one of the highest motorable lakes on earth at over 5,400 m near the Tibetan frontier.
It is paired with Lachung but is operationally distinct: Lachung points toward Yumthang and rhododendron valleys; Lachen points up — into rarer air, frontier-controlled zones, and altitude that genuinely matters.
The protected area requires permits, military checkpoints, and pre-dawn departures for the Gurudongmar drive, and the altitude requires acclimatised pacing — neither is negotiable, both are handled.
MyTripMyTravel runs Lachen as a permit-managed, medically-aware extension from a Gangtok base — only when conditions, season, and party readiness align — with the same Sikkim chauffeured-fleet protocol that runs the rest of the circuit.

When to Deploy
March – mid-June, October – November
Mid-March to mid-June is the prime window — manageable temperatures and accessible Gurudongmar drive. October to November offers clear post-monsoon air. The monsoon (late June–September) brings serious landslide risk on the North Sikkim road and is avoided. Deep winter can seal the route. The altitude is genuinely high — pacing matters in any season.
