Thiruvananthapuram
The City of Lord Anantha
Overview
Thiruvananthapuram, commonly called Trivandrum, is the capital of Kerala, on the state's far southwestern coast facing the Arabian Sea. Its name means 'the city of Anantha,' the serpent on whom Lord Vishnu reclines at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, a Dravidian-Kerala shrine that drew global attention when treasure vaults were catalogued from 2011, making it one of the world's richest temples. Note the temple admits only Hindus, under a strict traditional dress code. Kovalam's lighthouse beach lies about 16 km south. MyTripMyTravel runs Trivandrum as a coastal and wellness gateway to southern Kerala, heritage-quarter walks, Ayurveda by the sea, and chauffeured transfers.
Thiruvananthapuram is Kerala's political and cultural capital, and its gentlest introduction. Built over seven low hills near the tip of the Indian peninsula, the city takes its name from Anantha, the thousand-headed serpent of Hindu cosmology on whom Lord Vishnu reclines, the presiding deity of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple at its heart.
That temple is the anchor. A Dravidian gopuram rises over a gold-clad sanctum where the deity lies in the ananthasayanam pose, and its now-famous underground vaults made international news when their catalogued contents placed it among the wealthiest temples on earth. Around it sit the wooden Kuthiramalika Palace, the Indo-Saracenic Napier Museum, the Sree Chitra Art Gallery, and the leafy Museum-and-zoo precinct, a compact heritage core unusual for an Indian state capital.
MyTripMyTravel uses Trivandrum as the soft-landing gateway to Kerala's deep south. We time the heritage-quarter walks to the morning light, base wellness guests on the Ayurveda-rich coast at nearby Kovalam and Poovar, and run the fleet down to the beaches and backwaters, treating the capital as a restful start rather than a checklist stop.

Thiruvananthapuram in brief
When to visit
September to March
The post-monsoon-to-winter window from September to March is the most comfortable, warm coastal days, lower humidity, and calm seas for Kovalam and the beaches. April and May turn hot and sticky on this tropical coast. The southwest monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain, but it is also the traditional Ayurveda season, when many wellness guests deliberately come for treatment in the cooler, greener air. We plan around the rhythm you want.

Good to know
Thiruvananthapuram, your questions
Can anyone enter the Padmanabhaswamy Temple?
No. Entry is restricted to Hindus, and a strict traditional dress code applies, men in a mundu without an upper garment, women in a saree, set-mundu, or long skirt. Photography inside is not permitted. Non-Hindu guests can still admire the exterior and the surrounding heritage quarter.
How many days do I need in Trivandrum?
Two nights covers the temple and museum quarter, Kovalam, and the coast at an unhurried pace. Add nights if you are building in an Ayurveda programme.
Is Trivandrum good for Ayurveda?
Yes, the Kovalam and Poovar coast just south of the city is one of Kerala's most established Ayurveda belts, and we arrange authentic, physician-led treatment there.
How far is Kovalam beach?
About 16 km, or roughly 40 minutes by our chauffeured fleet, an easy base or day trip from the capital.
When is the best time to visit?
September to March for warm, comfortable coastal weather; the June to August monsoon is wet but is also the traditional Ayurveda season.
Does it pair with the rest of Kerala?
Yes. It is the natural southern gateway, linking north up the coast to Varkala, then Alleppey's backwaters and Kochi.
